Tim Mize
Fine Art Silkscreen Printer
I produce limited editions of hand-pulled fine art silkscreen prints inspired by the people I and places I see while living in Ajijic. They are printed by me, by hand, on simple equipment that I build from wood. The printing is a completely manual process (unlike giclée or other digital inkjet printing methods).
I produce only a certain number of each print and each one is individually numbered. For example, if the print is signed 11/20 it is the eleventh print from a series of 20 prints. They are individual works of art and no two are exactly alike.
Each color in the image requires its own screen. To make a ten-color print, I design and build ten screens. To print, I lay the paper on the work table, put the screen on top, and press the ink through the screen with a squeegee. After drying I repeat the process for each color. The print is built up by adding one layer of color at a time. The ten-color print mentioned before requires ten individual printing operations - ten layers of color - one for each screen.
When the print is complete, I destroy the screens so no more copies of that print can ever be produced.
