Rachel Mckinney
Hand-Built & Beaded Ceramic Art
Through my many travels and living abroad, I developed an interest in indigenous
peoples and their cultures having a particular affinity for rituals, religious celebrations,
and spiritual commonalities. These “threads” serve as an under-current to my one-of-
a-kind decorative hand-built and beaded ceramic wall pieces, with expressions of
relationship, unity, and nature at the forefront.
I initially created a process over 10 years ago whereby I treat the clay as if it were
fabric. As I sew in semi-precious stones, beads, metal adornments and/or leather my
art pieces takes on textile-like qualities, capitalizing on my prior medium exploration with
weaving. These elements combined with using multiple glazes and layering to obtain
varied effects and colors adds a unique dimension to each art piece; Every piece of art
is one of a kind.
I have had success selling at art shows for well over a decade in the Southwestern and
Midwestern states across the U.S. I moved to Lakeside April of 2026 and immediately
joined ALC. I hope to actively participate in the artist community here and expand my
artistic knowledge while doing so.
